Mission
Our mission is to help consumers save money on today’s cell phone, home phone and business phone services. We do this by offering the latest information, news and rates from a wide selection of local and worldwide telecom partners.
Our Inspiration
Three pivotal experiences prompted us to start this site:
- Paying an outrageous phone bill to the local phone company when my wife and I first moved to L.A.
- My interactions on the phone with cell phone rental customers as they went through a confusing array of international phone choices.
- Being introduced to the huge savings of using a GSM phone and prepaid SIM card at an international cell phone rental start up.
Technology, I discovered, had the answers to frustratingly high telecom bills. And I want to share that news.
A Painful Experience Teaches Us the Value of VoIP
When we first moved to L.A. in 2002 we called the local phone company and ordered landline phone. It was a typical copperline (ILEC) phone service that gave us unlimited local calls for about $40 a month. And we selected a few additional services such as call waiting and caller ID for about $10 a month each.
Well, we learned that hard way that according to the phone company even though we lived in the large city of Los Angeles, “local” calling was limited to within about 5 miles of our house! This meant that calls to my wife at work 12 miles away incurred additional, per-minute, in-state long distance charges.
But wait, that’s not all.
Since we’d just moved to a new city and we were Newlyweds (remember, it was 2002) we were using dial-up service to access the internet. We innocently looked up a list of choices for “local” dial in numbers and started surfing the web to get to know our new city.
Often we just left the computer dialed into the internet since we’d sometimes step away and then remember something else to look up. There’s no reason to wait while the computer redials and connects, right? After all, we had “unlimited” local service.
Can you guess where this is going?
Next thing we know, the bill for our seldom-used home phone was over $400 a month! We managed to negotiate a plan that allowed us to pay off the charges over several months – gee, thanks. All that just to dial into an internet modem a few miles outside the phone company’s designated “local” limits.
Now, at the time Vonage and VoIP weren’t unheard, but we suddenly became much more interested in those commercials touting, “unlimited national calling for $20 a month”.
We switched to VoIP (we use Lingo) and have never paid more than $20 a month for home phone service since.

Honest Advice, whether Roam, Rent or Use GSM
Some customers’ travel plans are best suited for phone rentals, some are better served buying a GSM phone and single country SIM card, and occasionally it makes sense to rent a cell phone or to use a post-paid cell phone rental service (though usually only when a company is paying for the very high rates!)
The trust we built providing overseas communications solutions prompted us to provide travel and everyday communication solutions through this web site.

FTC Disclosure Statement
As stated above, we have financial arrangements with the companies, products and services mentioned and discussed on this site. We’re more than happy to comply with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) disclosure requirement.
“The revised Guides also add new examples to illustrate the long standing principle that “material connections” (sometimes payments or free products) between advertisers and endorsers – connections that consumers would not expect – must be disclosed. These examples address what constitutes an endorsement when the message is conveyed by bloggers or other “word-of-mouth” marketers. The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.”
