Your Questions About International Sim Card Prepaid

Thomas asks…

Are there any stores in the Brisbane International Airport which sells a prepaid mobile SIM card?

Which prepaid mobile SIM in Aust gives the best value? Telstra or Optus? I’m looking for one with a data plan for my iPhone.

Pete answers:

Get one from Rebelfone before you leave – http://www.rebelfone.com/australia_simcards.aspx?couId=1

James asks…

How would someone dial my US phone (w/european SIM) in europe with a international prepaid card?

All I know is *Call the prepaid number—enter the PIN—followed by 011(for Europe)—* but after this I don’t know what to do…should they dial the area code where I am and then my regular cell number???

Please HELPPP!!

Pete answers:

Or, you’re in Europe using an international SIM card in your US cell phone. If that’s the case then the SIM card has its own number that people who want to call you will need to know. Once you switched the US SIM for an international one your phone has a different number.

For someone to call that number using a calling card from the US, give them the number you got with the SIM card and tell them to follow the dialing instructions on the calling card.

David asks…

What stores in Ireland sell international sim cards?

Or just sell sim cards that can be used in both the Ireland and Northern Ireland? I don’t have time to order on before my trip online,

Pete answers:

Any mobile phone store will sell them. Some operators with stores in every city are O2, Vodafone, Meteor, Tesco Mobile, 3. You might be better off getting one in Ireland and one when you are in N.Ireland. Will prob save you money doing that. You’ll need an unlocked mobile phone. Alternatively you could simply buy a cheap prepay phone with sim for under €20.

Carol asks…

Will a “unlocked” GSM cell phones work with the carrier MetroPCS?

Here is there website if it helps http://www.metropcs.com
If not how about the CDMA cell phones?
Thanks for helping me understand

Pete answers:

Metro is a CDMA carrier (they dont use simcards) where as GSM phones (use simcards) they use different technology and are not compatible with each other–Unlocked GSM phone only work with GSM carriers suhc as AT&T or T-Mobile. You can however make a CDMA phone work with Metro such as Verizon or Sprint all you need to do is get the phone “Flashed” and Metro will set it up for you.

Unlocked iPhones Can Save Some Users a Lot of Money

From an article in the Mercury News:

Three years ago, Vivek Wadhwa used his iPhone while traveling in India.

“I only checked emails a few times, made several calls,” Wadhwa, a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, recalled of the 12-day trip.

When he returned home, he received an iShock: an AT&T phone bill with international roaming charges for $800.

“I was so outraged,” the Menlo Park resident said. “So for the next trip, I hacked my iPhone — unlocked it — and just plugged in my local (Indian) SIM card.”

The charges for the Indian SIM, for voice and data, cost him as little as $2 per trip.

Your Questions About International Sim Card Best Buy

Jenny asks…

i need a international SIM card. i dont know anything about what i should get?

i am on a contract htc desire with tescos. not pay as you go. i dont know how any of this stuff works. hehe. my best friend/girlfriend lives in Australia and i want to phone her up but i know how much the bills are to phone by a mobile phone. i would like to get an international card so i can phone her for very cheap. lol. i live in Wales btw.

Where is the best SIM card i can buy for cheap?
thnx

Pete answers:

Try an international dial around card. This way you keep your current SIM in your phone, but dial a toll free or local access number, then a PIN. You can even have a prepaid balance just like a SIM card! Use this tool to find the best rate rate from Wales to Australia, http://www.communicationhq.com/international-sim-cards/international-calling-cards/

Michael asks…

International SIM cards?
For frequent travellers where is the best site online to buy an international SIM card to use in the USA/EU ? I will need to use it to call for emergencies and browse/email a lot. Can I buy a SIM that will work both in the USA and EU countries, where could I buy one online or will I have to go with a Verizon/USTmobile buy a SIM with them and than a phone provider in the Netherlands when I get there. Please I’d appreciate some serious advice thank you for the help! Oh and my phone is unlocked and from the UK :)

Pete answers:

I recommend One SIM Card, they have both a UK and US number in the same sim card, free incoming calls in 90 countries and coverage in 220 countries. I use it when travelling and until now I couldn’t be more happy with it.

Your Questions About Unlocked Gsm

George asks…

How do SIM cards work with an unlocked GSM phone?

I am technologically challenged. I am going to France in a week.

A friend purchased an unlocked inexpensive GSM phone from ekit last year and offered me the phone without the SIM card. If I purchase a card in Paris, will I get a French mobile phone number? Will I have to follow ekit’s directions on how to call? Will the calls go through ekit or through the SIM card provider?

I realize these may be stupid questions, but I don’t know the answers.

Thanks.

Pete answers:

If the phone is unlocked it will simply work with any GSM SIM card that’s put in it. Whatever the number is assigned to that number that’s the number the phone would have when the SIM is in it.

Nancy asks…

What’s the difference between buying a phone without a plan and an unlocked GSM?

Does unlocked GSM mean I can use it with any carrier, and just activate it with my carrier?
My current carrier is Sprint. I’m looking into getting a new phone, but am NOT interested in renewing our two-year agreement (we’ve had problems with Sprint for years).
I’m looking at the Motorola Razr on the motorola website.
Unlocked GSM: http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en/US/adirect/motorola?cmd=catDisplayStyle&catKey=600682

Phones without plans (I don’t see Sprint available): http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en/US/adirect/motorola?cmd=catDisplayStyle&catKey=600681
I currently have an LG VI125, does that have a SIM card? How much would one cost, and would Sprint require a new 2 year contract in order for me to get one?

Pete answers:

Yea if u have an unlocked gsm phone all u have to buy is a sim card from a carrier, put it in, and ur set.

Your Questions About Unlocked Gsm Cell Phones

William asks…

Can an unlocked GSM cell phone be used with a CDMA service?

GSM is sim card right? What about the other way around? Can an unlocked CDMA phone be used with a GSM service. Also are there CDMA sim cards? Sorry if this question is stupid. Anyways Thanks for you help.

Pete answers:

No question is stupid. GSM does usually require use of a SIM card. CDMA phones typically don’t have the SIM card. Not sure if there are any at all.

Unfortunately, GSM and CDMA are not cross compatible. Some phones may offer versions for both (such as the Nexus S) but they will not work on both types of networks.

If you’re looking to travel, use GSM. It’s more common internationally.

Joseph asks…

how to reprogram an unlocked gsm cell phones to work with your carrier?

Pete answers:

If a phone is unlocked all you have to do is pop your sim card into the phone and it should work.

If you are talking about settings, such as email, internet, messaging etc….check

http://www.howardforums.com

Look for your carrier and do a search for “settings”

Your Questions About Unlocked Gsm

Can I use a verizon global sim card in an unlocked gsm phone?

I upgraded about six months back to an HTC Ozone World Edition on Verizon. It has a sim card, so would it be possible to use that sim card in an unlocked gsm phone? I want to upgrade to a Nexus One but it runs on T-Mobile.

Pete answers:

You can not. Verizon uses CDMA technology (no SIM, different type of tower).

Joseph asks…

If I bought an unlocked GSM phone can it be flashed to use my Cricket plan?

I know that Cricket uses CDMA. If I were to buy an UNLOCKED GSM phone can I get it flashed to use my Cricket plan??

NO :( as Cricket only does CDMA phones and one cannot change the phones inner hardware from GSM to CDMA, sorry.
